Overview

Jansson's BECOMING AN EFFECTIVE POLICY ADVOCATE teaches you the ins and outs of conducting policy practice, preparing you to become an effective policy advocate during your own career. The eighth edition's coverage includes discussion of such events and issues as Barack Obama's presidency, the presidential primaries and election of 2016, the battle over equality among national politicians in 2016, and many issues facing social agencies. By going beyond the traditional foundational approach to policy, this text helps you develop the skills you need to become an advocate for social change. It offers you practical guidance on how to develop social media campaigns, and discusses ways you can participate in reducing inequality -- the issue that drew the attention of millions of millennials in the presidential election of 2016.

Bruce S. Jansson (M.A., University of Chicago and Harvard University; Ph.D., University of Chicago) is the Driscoll/Clevenger Professor of Social Policy in the Department of Social Work at the University of Southern California (USC). He joined the USC faculty in 1973 after working in Pennsylvania and Michigan as a community organizer and planner for tenant rights. His scholarly interests focus on advancing mezzo, micro and macro policy advocacy in social work, as well as examining the history and practice of social welfare policy. Dr. Jansson invented the term "policy practice," which has become a required content area by the Council on Social Work Education. He recently developed the first multi-level policy advocacy framework that discusses policy advocacy at micro, mezzo and macro levels. He also has served as the Moses Distinguished Research Professor at the City University of New York Graduate Center. Dr. Jansson has written two books for Cengage: BECOMING AN EFFECTIVE POLICY ADVOCATE, now in its ninth edition, and THE RELUCTANT WELFARE STATE (9th Edition). Additional books include THE SIXTEEN TRILLION DOLLAR MISTAKE: HOW THE U.S. BUNGLED ITS NATIONAL PRIORITIES FROM THE NEW DEAL TO THE PRESENT (2001), IMPROVING HEALTHCARE THROUGH ADVOCACY and SOCIAL WELFARE SECTORS AND ADVOCACY. He has authored four research articles that develop measurement scales to measure the extent health professionals engage in patient and policy advocacy, as well as predictors of their levels of engagement, and is currently working on a book on inequality.

  • The book goes beyond the examination of policy advocacy at macro levels in government settings. It also includes material on mezzo policy advocacy in agencies and communities, and on micro policy advocacy in helping clients engage in policy advocacy.
  • Students receive practical guidance on how they can develop social media campaigns.
  • The book discusses ways that policy advocates can work to decrease inequality in the United States -- an issue that was a key theme of the 2016 presidential primaries and election.
  • Expanded content discusses ways students can construct "policy briefs," which describe initiatives, options, and recommendations that can be presented to policy makers in government, agency, and community settings.
  • The author uses the 2016 presidential primaries and election to illustrate many policy issues.
  • Discussion of global issues offers insight into cross-national migration of millions of persons to escape conflict and ISIS as well as issues confronted by immigrants to the United States.
  • Many "Policy Advocacy Challenges" in each chapter illustrate how social workers from around the country have used policy-advocacy skills and competencies to achieve policy reforms in agency, community, and legislative settings. Some examples integrate vid
  • Each chapter highlights the work of advocates who seek to reduce inequality in the United States and the world -- a key issue of millennial voters in the 2016 presidential primaries and elections.
  • The book makes content particularly relatable to students by providing examples of how other students have engaged in policy advocacy.
  • This text presents a unique hands-on framework designed to help students become effective policy advocates. The framework identifies recurring policy tasks, policy advocacy skills, and an array of policy competencies that allow policy advocates to put the
